Precision-Guided Relief

What Is Prostate Artery Embolization?

Prostate artery embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive, image-guided treatment that shrinks an enlarged prostate and eases BPH symptoms—without surgical incisions or an overnight hospital stay. Through a pin-sized puncture in the wrist or groin, our interventional radiologists block the tiny vessels that feed the prostate, allowing the gland to soften and urinary flow to improve—often within days.

Prostate Artery Embolization FAQs

Most men with moderate to severe BPH symptmos who want to avoid surgery. There is no upper or lower limit prostate size! A quick consult and medical and imaging record will confirm.

Medicare and most major insurers now recognize PAE; coverage depends on your specific plan and deductible. Our staff will verify benefits and obtain any needed pre-authorizations before you schedule.

No foley catheter will be placed during or after the procedure. A major advantage of PAE is that no device or instrument will be placed in your urethra.

No general anesthesia is required. We use deep IV sedation, so you’ll be relaxed and pain-free but still breathing on your own, with continuous monitoring by our team.

The intention is for the procedure to be permanent. However there is a small risk that the prostate could begin to grow again following a successful procedure, with studies showing that approximately 20% of patients will have recurrent BPH symptoms 5 years after the procedure.

Many patients notice easier flow within a week, with full benefits over 4-6 weeks as the prostate shrinks. Most return to normal activity the next day and desk work within 48 hours.

PAE is incision-free, has a lower risk of incontinence or sexual side effects, and is done entirely outpatient. TURP and laser procedures can be effective but often involve hospital stays and a longer catheter period.

Temporary pelvic discomfort, mild burning during urination, or low-grade fever can occur for a few days. Serious complications—such as non-target embolization or infection—are rare (<1 %).
